Playground Legends 3-on-3 (Meadowlands)

The day came and went with the Playground Legends standing tall on the day. Fiat Sports Centre, Zone 9 Meadowlands, Soweto is where it all went down.

8 Teams signed up for the contest and boy did the teams bring their game, as teams from the surrounding hoods came through to pit their skills against each other. We witnessed some scintillating game-play with some teams dominating their opponents from start to finish in their match-ups, whilst other matches were hard fought with either side not allowing an inch for the opponents to gain the advantage.

As the contest goes someone had to win and someone had to loose. In the final match-up Jordan, Musa and Given (Red team) faced Mike, Mandla and Siphiwe (Burgundy team). Stage was set for an exciting encounter between the two teams since the Red team came into the finals as the favourites and the Burgundy team the underdogs.

The aim of the tournament is to grow basketball competition within Gauteng and show South Africa that we still have it!

SERIOUS efforts are being made to revive basketball in Soweto.

Jackie MasenyaJackie Masenya, one of the founding members of the sport in the township, says the once-thriving sport has been in decline for some time now but a lot of work is being done to try to resurrect it in Soweto.

“I always get upset when I drive around Soweto to see basketball courts empty .

“The only township where I saw youngsters playing was Diepkloof and it was disappointing that a place as big as Soweto had empty courts with nobody playing,” Masenya said.

ESPN and DARK CHILD take it to the streets

Saturday the 16th of May was that time of the year again, when ESPN together with Dark Child Production show case some of the “talent” that Mzansi celebrities have to offer outside their day jobs. This year they decided to take a short left into The University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus, this is where the Celebrity Basketball Extravaganza took place. The event was quite a huge success; not only did the organizers choose the perfect day to hold the event (The University’s Open Day) but they chose some of the best celebs to entertain the crowd.
