In what is fast becoming the story of the season, Vets have gone and done it again by upsetting CPUT in Game 1 of the WCBA final. In what should have been a mismatch in terms of physical ability turned out to be a mismatch in terms of mental ability and in this case it was all about experience. Continue reading »

Game 1 of the ladies final came and went… On one side of the court we had Montana Vikings and on the other the favourites CPUT doing battle in a very exciting game. In the first half of the game, it looked as if an upset was on the cards with the Vikings doing the running and staying in the lead throughout.

In the deciding Game 3 of the series played at UCT, the Vets showed their experience and hunger by knocking out the defending champions Montana Vikings in a game that was all about hustle. After being blown out by 20 points in Game 2, Montana Vikings were expected to make easy work of their opponents to secure a passage to the finals where they would have met CPUT. But sports has a way of showing us that if you have the hunger and the will to win anything is possible and the Vets were not going to lie down and play dead for the defending champions.

WCBA 2010 finals fixtures

So the weekend was jam packed with some local basketball in Cape Town. There was an upset on day one of the playoffs in the Mens division, with the Vets showing Montana Vikings that they still had enough in their tank by beating them in Game 1 on Friday night. You could say that there was a bit of complacency from the defending champs but they rectified it on sunday by taking Game 2. Now it’s on to Game 3 to decide on who will advance to meet the CPUT Cats who defeated Montana Vikings 2nd team. Continue reading »

With the WCBA Playoffs a week away, CPUT finally got their act together to beat their much fancied and possible final opponents at the last round of the group stages held at UCT. Montana Vikings had played the day before and maybe fatigue managed to creep in but it was a lackluster performance, frustrating at times.

With the semi-finalists almost decided by the time the game got underway, it was a matter of getting some bragging rights before the post season started. Continue reading »

Basketball gives youth a sporting chance

More than 3000 children from disadvantaged communities throughout the Western Cape will take partake in 15 different indoor and outdoor sporting disciplines including basketball as part in the fourth annual Kellogg’s®Health of the Nation 50-Hour Sports Challenge, which takes place at the Western Province Cricket Club in Newlands from Friday 17 until Sunday 19 September.

Western Cape MEC for Education Donald Grant and Good Hope FM DJ Suga will officially kick off the event at 15h00 and participants, who range from 9 to 13 years of age, will keep a ball in motion for an uninterrupted 50 hours to highlight the importance of physical activity in children’s lives.
