False promises, lies, deceit, corruption, nepotism and lack of planning are hurting the game of basketball in South Africa and every year is like a vicious circle of inaction on the part of the people in charge… We watch as the years go by and another wave of hope is dashed. The problem is not that we don’t have the talent but that we don’t have the administrators in place to revive the sport. And those that are trying to revive it indep

endently are faced with countless hurdles from the mother body Basketball South Africa (BSA). As a result, we end up sending teams and coaches to international competitions to fail because we don’t equip them with the tools to succeed.

After the publication of the article yesterday, we received a response from BSA challenging most of these allegations. I have posted their response to the article in green.

False dawn…

When the current BSA regime was “elected” into power it gave them an opportunity to distance themselves from the past and set the sport of basketball in South Africa on a new path to recovery. They had a chance to prepare the ground for the future of the game by setting up the structures and by having a plan of action to help the sport move forward but instead we are still at the same stage we were when they took power. This past Friday, I made my way to the UCT basketball courts where I was served up an entertaining evening of basketball. It started with the impressive performance of the ladies with UCT representing on their home court with a one sided win; this was followed up with what was supposed to be the decider between CPUT and UWC. The winner of the game would be assured of a place in the USSA tournament to be held in KZN later this year. Continue reading »

With women in basketball soaring the skies and flying the South African flag high;its sad that hats are not coming off for our talented sisters. From being left in the dark in the old days to dominating the national side of basketball recently, to now having qualified for the African Championship that will be held in Madagascar later this year…

Taking a look at the team that went to Zimbabwe for the qualifiers; most of the players are University students playing in the USSA tournament. Fact: In 2005, Turkey World Student Games, the Mzansi ladies underperformed; denying them the opportunity to play in the 2008 World Student Games. Granted they didn’t do well in Turkey, so it was “acceptable” that they would miss the Thailand Games; but why aren’t they going to Serbia later this year?

A few weeks back, Mybasketball had a brief interview with the outgoing president of USSA basketball; Elijah Ncube. We asked “Mr President” straight forward questions that he struggled to answer. Continue reading »

For the past few years we have watched the game in South Africa lose a bit of value due to various reasons and recently the men in the middle have been the topic of conversation at numerous tournaments amongst the coaches, fans and organizers. The referees are an integral part of the game and they have so much to contribute to the growth and the quality of our game.

With certain sectors of the game making strides to take the game to the next level especially this year, the officials have unfortunately lagged behind. Maybe you can’t blame their stagnation because like for most of us basketball in this country has been like going to a surfing competition in Durban, year after year… By that I mean that we, as the basketball community, wait for the next big wave and then after riding that wave, we sit and wait for the next one without any reassurances or continuity whatsoever that there will be a next one or how big it will be. So why should the officials strive to improve their standard and professionalism towards the game. Continue reading »
