Men
On the Men’s side, Australia won the gold medal, defeating Canada with a final score of 72-60. The win was significant for Australia considering that Canada led for much of the match. Australia had a balanced attack, with three players scoring 16 or more points and all but one of their players in the points. (Scoresheet)
Great Britain won the bronze over the USA, defeating them by a margin of 85-77 behind a fantastic 32 points by Terence Bywater. (Scoresheet)
Well done to Sasol on their new advert featuring the SA Wheelchair Basketball team [the one heading off to the Paralympics] versus our very own Springbok rugby team. It’s awesome to see positive publicity like this for basketball in SA!
For all who haven’t seen it yet, here it is – Chairs vs Champs:
SA’s basketball team sadly didn’t get anywhere near the Olympic games in Beijing, and from the looks of the poll results alongside (so far), it seems there are no high expectations for 2012 either.
There was a good article on the team in the May 2008 edition of SA Sports Illustrated that gives more information, but unfortunately we could not locate an online copy to direct you to. If you can, get a copy and read it.
