Ashraf tournament 2010 low down

Last week Wits University remembered one of its fallen heroes with the annual Ashraf tournament. For the first time in a long time the tournament was very well attended, maybe an indication that the basketball public and players are starving for some local action in Gauteng.

Some of the interesting clashes in the preliminary rounds of the tournament included the game between Wanderers Scorpions vs. Soweto Raptors (Ladies) and TUT Limpopo vs. UJ (Men). Scorpions looked like a totally revamped team that can now challenge some of their more renowned opponents and they beat Raptors by 4 points with Emma Ledwaba doing the business down the line. In the men section, TUT Limpopo almost upset UJ with a close encounter that could have gone either way. Notable mentions must go to Jerry for the entertainment he provided with his dunks over some of the UJ boys and the fact that his team was playing without a coach speaks volume for their dedication. USSA Basketball trials 3 – 4 April 2010

Please be informed via this notice that USSA NEC at its meeting on the 12/13 February 2010 has approved our request to hold the trials for to select a team to represent USSA at the CUCSA games in Botswana from the 01 – 10 July 2010.
Therefore, this is an invitation to you to send your best players that you think can make the national team. Also all players who were in the national team last year are invited to trial out this year as well.

WITS University Basketball Courts.

Bees just another fairy tale story

Once upon a time in a place about an hour away from Joburg; buzzed the Mamelodi Bees, a team oozing with talented players such as the likes of Lebo, Sophie and young players like Makgotso Moloantoa, Takalani Mfamadi and Matlala Mokoko. This team was very hard to beat and every woman’s team scheduled to play Asnath Makena’s swarm needed to bring their “A game”, then Lebo had a baby and the younglings flew off to varsity and the fear factor that other teams had went with them…

The once lethal Mamelodi Bees had their first clash with some of their ex-players in what one may call a “boring basketball game” where the only action was a crying baby on the Bees bench. Read the rest of this entry →

It’s that time of the year when we as Wits Basketball bow down and remember the great spirit and enthusiasm that lived within those that has passed on. He is described as a stalwart of Wits Basketball during his time and is always described as a great player. His contribution to Basketball and

Wits Basketball was immense and is greatly remembered. Wits Basketball is hosting this tournament in remembrance of Ashraf Lodewyk’s contribution to the club and Wits sport.

I am confident that this tournament will once again fulfill such an important purpose in the challenge facing us in a changing society. We as the Wits basketball club are kindly inviting your team to the tournament both male and female teams. To participate in this tournament each team is required to pay R450 registration fee which is a prerequisite for team participation. No pay no play.
