U/16 Coach Report

It is the most anticipated, exciting, basketball game of the year for both Pretoria and Pietermaritzburg Girls High. The girls were very excited on the train, all coming up with their own ideas on game plans. I was of course drawing up my own game plans trying to think of all possible situations and coming up with various solutions. In the end I was making myself more nervous and decided to just trust myself that our preparation would be adequate. The morning we arrived everyone was in good spirits and excited for the game. The moment I walked onto the indoor courts my nerves took over, doing my best not to allow my girls to see my nerves, I could see their own nerves setting in. Our team talk before the game helped to calm them and they were more than ready to take on Pietermaritzburg. Never have I been this nervous as coach before a game but I used it to my advantage to keep my girls motivated and driven.

The game started out a bit shaky, the girls too eager to just get that first basket, they were not focused and fumbled around. A time-out was essential, after calming them down and getting them to focus on playing THEIR game, things began to look better. As each quarter ticked by so my team began to play as a more unified unit. Their defence improved so much throughout the game even I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The only low point for me was the amount of fouls we committed, one of my players eventually fouling out. Despite this I was extremely proud of my girls, from a rather bad start to the game, they just pulled themselves together, focused and played their hearts out! I could not have asked for more from them. I’m one very proud coach.

WELL DONE to my U/16 A team. You ladies are AMAZING!!!

Result: PTA GIRLS HIGH: 39

PMB GIRLS HIGH: 21

U/19 A Coach Report

1st Team

19 May 2007

I have played on and watched a lot of teams over the years, but the atmosphere on the PHSG 1st team is new for me. The respect, encouragement, selflessness and unity that these girls express truly defines what is means to be a team. Every player has a role and on Saturday morning, each one fulfilled that roll, leading us to a big victory!

We started pressing PMB right from the start and though we didn’t get many steals, we did get in their heads and we made them work for points. They played great defense and took away our fast break, so we also had to work hard to score. The match was close throughout the first and second quarters and several of our girls got into foul trouble, which made things more difficult for us.

The score at halftime was 20-16 with PHSG on top, but the game was far from finished. We talked through some strategy, focusing mostly on the basics: playing good fundamental basketball! The girls came out in the third quarter fired up. We got a few quick steals and went on an 8-0 run that put us in the lead until the final whistle.

Thanks to the crowd for their enthusiasm and support. Congratulations PHSG!
