By on October 11, 2008 in News

The city of Pietermaritzburg was graced by a fantastic finish to the PMB Basketball league. The league came to a great end with a dazzling display of the game in the league final on Sunday, 5 October 2008.

Being the first league to hit the city in a few years, the standards were, however, particularly high with an array of skill and a sho w of passion that was fit for the camera. An the cameras were there, as well as other forms of the media ready to capture the last day of the spectacular sporting event. SABC’s Slam Dunk and the PMB newspaper, The Witness, were present at the YMCA Indoor facility, to inhale every bit of information and excitement the afternoon had for them. The day started with an exhibition game between two of PMB’s finest high schools; St. Charles College and Maritzburg College, to curtain-raise for the final. The final was newly-formed rivalry match between the hosts, the University of Kwazulu-Natal-PMB, and the ever-determined, Youth of Choice, a team consisting of some of PMB’s most experienced players.

The exhibition game proved to be just as exciting as the final, with Maritzburg College coming back to gain a narrow 1-point victory over St. Charles: the score, 38-37.

The final was one for the books, with UKZN-PMB being resistant to a loss throughout the game but unfortunately losing to a better quality, more experienced Youth of Choice team. And this quality and experience was reflected upon in the score; 51-35.

This gave Youth of Choice the title of the 2008, PMB Basketball League champions and saw them lift the TAU TAU floating trophy at the end of the day. Congratulations to “the Beavers” of UKZN-PMB on a well-earned second place and to the Junior Tuskers on achieving a third place spot in the league. Congratulations must also go to Nkululeko Mthalane, the 2008, PMB Basketball League Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The day was not just graced by expertise in basketball but in entertainment as well. During breaks and periods within games, talented hip hop and house djs, hip hop acts and dance groups entertained the crowd and left a sense of hype in the air. This event was also sponsored by TAU TAU sports who proved to be a vital part to the success of the league.

With a spectacular finale to the season, one only can only wonder what PMB has in store for the basketball community next year. The basketball club at UKZN-PMB has promised a bigger, better and more brilliant league next year. None-the-less, this was a good start for local basketball and a job well done on the part of the club.

See you all next year…
