2010 FIBA WOrld ChampionshipsWith the 2010 World Championships of Basketball coming up later this year, we thought some information about the participating teams would be useful. If you have something to share regarding the teams or the tournament, please let us know.

The Tunisia men’s team is currently ranked 42nd in the world, heading up to the World Championships.

Although they are one of Africa’s most experienced teams, having appeared at the FIBA Africa Championships 18 times, this will be Tunisia’s first appearance at the World Championships. And unlike their fellow African compatriots heading to the big show (Angola and Cote d’Ivoire), Tunisia has never won gold at the FIBA Africa Championships.

The Tunisian team gained entry to the Championships by winning a bronze medal at the Africa Championships in Libya in 2009, beating Cameroon to finish 3rd in their best result since 1970.

The team’s victory was led by shooting guard Amine Rzig, who is likely to be the player to watch on this team. Rzig plays in the Egypt Basketball League and joins a team with a good mix of youth and (relative) experience.

Amine RzigTunisia have landed in the tough Group B with the dangerous USA, as well as Brazil, Croatia, Iran and Slovenia, all ranked well ahead of them in the FIBA rankings. Despite the tough group draw, the team must surely be excited to be playing against such high quality opposition.

Good luck to Team Tunisia for the competition!

Although the odds are against them, their first round will be filled with opportunities to observe and learn from some of the game’s most exciting players.

No matter how they finish, it will be a memorable experience for the team and country to build on.

More about Team Tunisia

Darren spent many years playing basketball in Pretoria, searching out every possible way to gain extra inches on his vertical in order to disprove the theory that white men can't jump. After being distracted by the corporate world for several years, Darren returned to the game he loves to contribute in some way to its' future. Darren firmly believes we will see basketball in its rightful place as one of the top sports in South Africa, and that one of the keys to doing so is seeing information about the game made easily accessible to everyone.
