GBA Goes Ahead with AGM on May 30th

gbaAfter a disappointing turnout at the Johannesburg leg of the GBA Roadshow and a failure to secure a venue for the Pretoria leg of the roadshow, the GBA executive is looking to ensuring the success of the AGM on 30 May 2010.

Members of the basketball community are invited to register at the AGM on May 30th at Holy Family College in Parktown, Johannesburg.

gbaGBA is preparing for their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 30th, 2010, when the GBA Council will meet to vote in the executive leadership for 2010 – 2012.

Leading up to the AGM, the Interim GBA Executive will be touring Gauteng to register Members and circulate the draft Constitution, Vision, Values and new GBA Model to be formalised by the GBA Council. Basketball SA cancelled the upcoming U18 inter-provincial tournament (IPT) as too few provinces heeded the call to confirm their attendance at the tournament.

In a notice dated 18 March, 2010, the Basketball SA Manco informed provinces that the upcoming U18 IPT that was too be held in Tlokwe fro 28 March to 1 April, was cancelled “due to non-confirmation of participation by provincial members.”

The Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA) is in crisis and an Interim GBA Committee has been appointed to map a way forward. A press conference will be convened on 6 December at Holy Family College, 40 Oxford Road Parktown, to discuss Gauteng’s non-participation in the upcoming IPT.

At a Special General Meeting convened on 28 November 2009 by the GBA executive, interested members of the basketball community passed a motion to dissolve the incumbent GBA executive as a result of numerous failed attempts to convene an AGM to elect a new committee, and growing discontent within the basketball community. With women in basketball soaring the skies and flying the South African flag high;its sad that hats are not coming off for our talented sisters. From being left in the dark in the old days to dominating the national side of basketball recently, to now having qualified for the African Championship that will be held in Madagascar later this year…

Taking a look at the team that went to Zimbabwe for the qualifiers; most of the players are University students playing in the USSA tournament. Fact: In 2005, Turkey World Student Games, the Mzansi ladies underperformed; denying them the opportunity to play in the 2008 World Student Games. Granted they didn’t do well in Turkey, so it was “acceptable” that they would miss the Thailand Games; but why aren’t they going to Serbia later this year?
