In terms of worldwide basketball, FIBA AfricaSouthern African countries fall into FIBA’s “Zone 6 classification”. There are 10 countries included in Zone 6, namely South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

On the global stage, this represents SA’s first step into international competition, so we should be using every opportunitiy to field teams and increase our international experience and exposure.

FIBA Afrique and Basketball in Africa reported this week about the Zone 6 U18 qualifiers being postponed – they were scheduled to start this weekend (15 May 2010) but have moved to 31 May to 4 June.

Ashraf tournament 2010 low down

By Victor Shakineza Other Comments Off

Last week Wits University remembered one of its fallen heroes with the annual Ashraf tournament. For the first time in a long time the tournament was very well attended, maybe an indication that the basketball public and players are starving for some local action in Gauteng.

Some of the interesting clashes in the preliminary rounds of the tournament included the game between Wanderers Scorpions vs. Soweto Raptors (Ladies) and TUT Limpopo vs. UJ (Men). Scorpions looked like a totally revamped team that can now challenge some of their more renowned opponents and they beat Raptors by 4 points with Emma Ledwaba doing the business down the line. In the men section, TUT Limpopo almost upset UJ with a close encounter that could have gone either way. Notable mentions must go to Jerry for the entertainment he provided with his dunks over some of the UJ boys and the fact that his team was playing without a coach speaks volume for their dedication. AND1 back in South Africa

By Victor Shakineza Other Comments Off

AND1 is back in South Africa and the brand has been entrusted to DarkChild Productions. “We are very excited to have a brand that has been a part of basketball for years back in South Africa” says Cabby Magongwa (owner of DarkChild Productions). Magongwa says that this business is something that he looked to be a part of since he started DarkChild Productions in 2004 and finally the dream has come true. “Perhaps it was for a good course that it had to take this long for us to acquire the rights to distribute this magnificent brand, and this is thanks to Mike Merafe for introducing to me the opportunity through his American Sporting Goods contacts” says Magongwa.

Despite the extremely warm weather and scorching heat, we managed to survive a few weeks in Potchefstroom, where the University of the North West played hospitality to all the teams and officials needs.

There were six codes of sport featured at the event including football, netball, tennis, swimming, athletics and basketball. Ten Southern African countries competed in the event, which was last held two years ago in Namibia, these are South Africa (host), Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola and Malawi.

I was in Potch with Fresh and Tsitso, two regular referees in the LOP and GBL leagues, that were technical officials at the games. The whole tournament was organised quite well with accommodation, meals and transport being a breeze. The basketball camp of Volunteers and Officials consisted mainly of the North West basketball team, men and women. Thabo Letsebe and Clive (North West men coach), were also among the residents at Kom en Gaan. Continue reading »
