The curtain came down on the 2010 season of the inaugural Gauteng University Basketball League with VUT claiming the top price in the Men’s division and UJ taking it in the Ladies division.

The finals were held for the first time in Van der Bijl Park and in what proved to be a close affair in the Men’s division, the home team Vaal ended up with the W against a spirited Wits team. In the Ladies division, UJ beat their perennial  foes Tuks to take the title.

Ashraf tournament 2010 low down

By Victor Shakineza Other Comments Off

Last week Wits University remembered one of its fallen heroes with the annual Ashraf tournament. For the first time in a long time the tournament was very well attended, maybe an indication that the basketball public and players are starving for some local action in Gauteng.

Some of the interesting clashes in the preliminary rounds of the tournament included the game between Wanderers Scorpions vs. Soweto Raptors (Ladies) and TUT Limpopo vs. UJ (Men). Scorpions looked like a totally revamped team that can now challenge some of their more renowned opponents and they beat Raptors by 4 points with Emma Ledwaba doing the business down the line. In the men section, TUT Limpopo almost upset UJ with a close encounter that could have gone either way. Notable mentions must go to Jerry for the entertainment he provided with his dunks over some of the UJ boys and the fact that his team was playing without a coach speaks volume for their dedication. Update on trials: Please note that there has been a change to the venue for the U18 trials this coming Sunday:

University of Johannesburg, Bunting Road, Auckland Park

Furthermore, if players are unable to attend this Sunday due to a tournament or school holidays, GBA will be running a second day of trials on the weekend of 6 March 2010 (details to be confirmed). If your players intend to participate in these trials they must have proof that they could not be in attendance this coming weekend.

It is our vision to see an annual program established for the Team GBA programme that creates a greater consistency to provincial elite talent management for all age groups. Furthermore, although we have not to date secured a sponsor for this event, we are doing what we can to create the necessary resources for the U18 teams to participate in the upcoming IPTs at which national teams will be selected. We do not view the upcoming tournament as being the only highlight of the 2010 U18 program and we will be extending the U18 provincial duty this year to creating vital energy and excitement for the sport at grassroots development. Our value proposition is thus, that by your players participating in the 2010 U18 Gauteng teams we are developing provincial and national talent for the future through a more robust elite Gauteng basketball programme.

Yours in Basketball,

Kornelia
Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA)
