From the 12 to the 14 of December 2007, Gauteng Basketball hosted a successful women’s tournament at the Orlando Community Hall in Soweto. The winner of the senior section won R25000 cash and the winner of the junior section won R15000 along with more cash prizes for the all-stars and most valuable players.

The tournament at senior level was well contested but in the end the Zimbabwe jewels were the deserved winners by going unbeaten in their round robin games. They had a hard fought victory over UJ (29 – 27), beat Tuks (53 – 28), beat Eastern Cape (61 – 18), beat Limpopo (70 – 26). They combined experience with aggression and outgunned most of the South African teams with their amazing height in the post. University of Johannesburg came second with University of Pretoria taking 3rd place.

At junior level, Tshwane were the eventual winners after winning the deciding game against the other unbeaten side Limpopo. They had a quickly assembled team but they overcame their logistical issues to romp to victory in style in a very entertaining game.

Here are the team that took part:

Womens tour 2007

In 2007 after getting frustrated at the lack of information about the game he loved in South Africa, Victor decided to start Mybasketball and he hasn't looked back. For close to 15 years, Victor has experienced the game as a player, a coach, a spectator and now from a media perspective. The whole purpose of Mybasketball is to keep the fans informed about the game and anything related to it; whether it is here in SA, Africa or Overseas. Victor has made some great friends along the way and rekindled some amazing friendships through the game.. Some of those friends have joined him on this crusade to make basketball better for everyone, and he looks forward to a South Africa where basketball gets the credit it deserves and the focus is on youth development and improving the coaches.
