False promises, lies, deceit, corruption, nepotism and lack of planning are hurting the game of basketball in South Africa and every year is like a vicious circle of inaction on the part of the people in charge… We watch as the years go by and another wave of hope is dashed. The problem is not that we don’t have the talent but that we don’t have the administrators in place to revive the sport. And those that are trying to revive it indep
endently are faced with countless hurdles from the mother body Basketball South Africa (BSA). As a result, we end up sending teams and coaches to international competitions to fail because we don’t equip them with the tools to succeed.
After the publication of the article yesterday, we received a response from BSA challenging most of these allegations. I have posted their response to the article in green.
False dawn…
When the current BSA regime was “elected” into power it gave them an opportunity to distance themselves from the past and set the sport of basketball in South Africa on a new path to recovery. They had a chance to prepare the ground for the future of the game by setting up the structures and by having a plan of action to help the sport move forward but instead we are still at the same stage we were when they took power. After 2 gruelling days of basketball for all teams involved in the WCBA tournament, it all came down to another clash between the Vikings and the CATS in the Men’s final. These two teams have dominated the basketball landscape in Western province for the last few years and Montana Vikings look like they have stolen a step on their opponents in 2010. In the ladies final, it was home team UCT vs. CATS ladies. Having lost to UCT in the USSA qualifiers final, CATS wanted to set the record straight and they came out all guns blazing. Last week Wits University remembered one of its fallen heroes with the annual Ashraf tournament. For the first time in a long time the tournament was very well attended, maybe an indication that the basketball public and players are starving for some local action in Gauteng.
Some of the interesting clashes in the preliminary rounds of the tournament included the game between Wanderers Scorpions vs. Soweto Raptors (Ladies) and TUT Limpopo vs. UJ (Men). Scorpions looked like a totally revamped team that can now challenge some of their more renowned opponents and they beat Raptors by 4 points with Emma Ledwaba doing the business down the line. In the men section, TUT Limpopo almost upset UJ with a close encounter that could have gone either way. Notable mentions must go to Jerry for the entertainment he provided with his dunks over some of the UJ boys and the fact that his team was playing without a coach speaks volume for their dedication. This past Friday, I made my way to the UCT basketball courts where I was served up an entertaining evening of basketball. It started with the impressive performance of the ladies with UCT representing on their home court with a one sided win; this was followed up with what was supposed to be the decider between CPUT and UWC. The winner of the game would be assured of a place in the USSA tournament to be held in KZN later this year. Continue reading »

USSA Western Cape is proud to bring you the 2010 USSA qualifiers. Having spent two exciting years coaching in the GBL, I was convinced that it doesn’t get better than GBL…..well I don’t think so but only time will tell. Having been part of the opening day of the USSA qualifiers, the first thing that just hits one in the face is the numerous fans at the game. This felt like a USSA national tournament played at the prestigious UCT indoor sports hall. Continue reading »
