Mozambique Basketball – Rise of a fallen country

Mozambique has in the past dominated African Basketball in men and the women still rate amongst the best in Africa. In contrast, the men have been going from bad to worse but it seems like those hard times have its days numbered.
Last year the Mozambican Basketball Federation decided to copy the Angolan format and have a National league. For now, the competition will only cater for men and in two years time the women’s division will kick in. This National league as the name suggests, will be played throughout the country and teams will have to compete regionally in order to qualify for the National league.
This league is fully sponsored by Vodacom and it will be called Vodacom National Basketball League.
Below is how it will all go down:
The Vodacom National League will start on the 30th August and run until the middle of December where the champion will be declared.
Most teams from Maputo are looking into strengthening their squads and movements of players from one team to the other have been noticed throughout the regional phase. Teams are looking beyond borders and most top SA players have been invited to play there.
From what I could see, Mozambique will soon become a force to be reckoned with – there’s major injection of capital into basketball and the competition is fierce indeed. I will not be surprised if more SA players move to Mozambique indefinitely.
The Vodacom league is a format copied from the Angolans and we can all see what the Angolans have achieved from this and the total dominance that they have over their African counterparts.
