Gauteng University Basketball League 2010

After spending the better part of the year practising, playing tournaments and watching other sports, like the 2010 Soccer World Cup etc.. Gauteng has finally decided to get some real competition going with the Gauteng University Basketball League (GUBL). Pitting most of the institution in the province against each other will serve them as good preparation for the USSA games later on this year.

In 2007 after getting frustrated at the lack of information about the game he loved in South Africa, Victor decided to start Mybasketball and he hasn't looked back. For close to 15 years, Victor has experienced the game as a player, a coach, a spectator and now from a media perspective. The whole purpose of Mybasketball is to keep the fans informed about the game and anything related to it; whether it is here in SA, Africa or Overseas. Victor has made some great friends along the way and rekindled some amazing friendships through the game.. Some of those friends have joined him on this crusade to make basketball better for everyone, and he looks forward to a South Africa where basketball gets the credit it deserves and the focus is on youth development and improving the coaches.

As I said somewhere else, ABOUT TIME! Due to the University’s academic calendar and USSA games, it has always been a nightmare to organise a provincial league consisting of Universities and community clubs. I am confident that this move will suit the Varsities much bette and hopefully improve the standard of play as well as the USSA Basketball brand.
I must add that I am disappointed that private HE instutions are not included in the league as players from these institutions are denied the priviledge to play at this level and also to represent their country. Maybe this is also an opportunity for private instutions to form their own league and association?
Another critical question to be answered? WHAT NOW FOR PLAYERS WHO FINISHED SCHOOL?

Clubs!!! If you don’t have one, start one. If you got no league, start one. Gauteng has got enough ballers to make up allot of teams. Start playing, phone people, organise 3-on-3′s, whateva, just get going. A seed can only grow when you put it in the ground!!!

I’m thinking in the context of GBL, the varsity league was organised in response to the “GBL 2010 decision”, however no one is saying anything about the resuming of GBL and the affected Clubs such as Scorpions, Raptors, etc. Also, I’m not a fan of unorganised leagues when efforts could be spent on organised league. I would rather we first try to organise one and only if it fails then we could go unorganised.
